Being a Teacher, Why Not?

A few days ago, I was in a taxi going to campus. While I'm enjoying the raining (well, somehow I love the atmosphere when it's raining), the taxi driver talked to me and thought that I was a college student.

I smiled and I said, "No, Sir. I'm going to teach there."

I didn't surprise about what he said next. He said that I looked too young to be a lecturer. Yeah, I know that it's kinda rare to find a 21-years-old lecturer here.

Then, we started chatting. He said that he had a nephew, who was also a lecturer in Padang, West Sumatra. But unlike me, his nephew had got his master degree. We kept talking and sharing stories until we arrived at my campus.

When I got off his taxi, suddenly I thought about how I ended up here, being a lecturer. It was like a flashback when everyone had said to me, "You're crazy, man. Someone like you should've got many chances for a much better future. You can do this, you can do that, but you choose to be a lecturer (teacher)?"

Everytime someone says that to me, I just smile at them. I think, "What's wrong with being a teacher?" Yeah I know that in Indonesia, I can't expect much from a teacher's salary. It's just enough, and sometimes less.

However, I like teaching. I love sharing knowledge to others. I love seeing others that I taught be a success people. All of that feels so good to me, and those feelings can't be compared to money.

I still think today that being a teacher is a noble profession. Every success people must have at least a teacher who taught them until they can be who they are today. A teacher is like someone who prepared his students to get ready for facing what is awaiting them outside their 'ideal environment' called school/college.

Maybe I'm just too naive, but I only think about this:

If I teach someone, I will teach him to be at least the same level as I am. He doesn't need to get through my obstacles in learning because he will meet his. In short, i open the 'door' for him, he goes through it and open the other 'doors' to let others go through it, and so on.

If he succeed to open his 'doors', then it only means that he's already been above my level. And I love that. Imagine when we create a smart generation on and on, how great our nation will be? :D

Frankly, I never thought about being a teacher. Hahaha... I just like teaching and my life also seems to lead me there.

I do believe that when we love doing something in my life, it's the clue of what God wants us to be. So here I am, on my way to my destiny, doing one of my calls in life.. :)

This article is dedicated to all of my teachers, who contribute to lead me here, where I am who I am now, especially to my Great Teacher, my Lord, and my Saviour, Jesus Christ. :)
